What is Conservations?

All over the world, there are people who are waging "conservation" campaigns. Conservation means many things to many people. To some it means preserving the wilderness in certain sections. To others it means preserving the wildlife. Conservation includes efforts to protect forests, as well as the wise use off all natural resources.

The problem of conservation has arisen because mankind is using the world’s natural resources in greater quantity and variety than ever before. As the world’s population grows, and as more people live at a higher standard, there is greater demand for resources. These resources must be "conserved" to assure that there will be enough for the future.

What do we mean by "resources"? Well, they can be divided into three basic kinds. One is renewable resources. For example, water, farmland, forests, and grazing land, even while they are being used, can be improved and renewed through good management. This would include protection from erosion, irrigation, and fertilization.

A second group of resources is not renewable. These are mainly minerals they are used up once they are taken from the earth. These include coal, oil, and natural gas. There are some natural resources that cannot be used up. for example, solar energy, climate and oceans cannot be increased, decreased or damaged by man. Man can only destroy the beauty of scenery, or cause pollution of air, rivers, and canals.
